All Indian citizens who wish to travel overseas required to have a valid passport or travel documents, issued under the Passport Act 1967 of India. Govt. Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India- Consular, Passport and Visa (CPV) division issue different types of passport and travel documents like Ordinary / Official / Diplomatic Passport, Emergency certificates and certificate of identity for the purpose.
1. Basic Requirements for Passport
You are required to fill the prescribed passport application form online with all the required documents and fees. Your application can be rejected if your application form is not filled properly or due to the deficiency in the supporting/necessary documents. Not following the prescribed procedures can also be the reason of rejection for your passport application. To avoid the same please find below the list of basic supporting documents required for the passport application.
  • Proof of Date of Birth i.e. ORIGINAL Birth Certificate issued by the local municipal authority, 10th class certificate with date of birth mentioned etc.
  • Identity proof with photograph (to be verified by Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) Officials from the address proof and other documents)
  • Proof of residence i.e. AADHAR Card, Original Bank / post office passbook with sign & stamp
  • Proof of nationality (to be verified by Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) Officials from the supporting documents submitted).
  • In case of minor applicants (below 4 years of age), carry the recent passport size photograph (4.5 X 3.5 cm) with white background.
Important Note: Resubmission of application form is required, in case the applicant does not visit the Passport Seva Kendra within 90 days from the online form submission.

2. Process (Online Form Submission)

Online Passport Form Submission
Step 1: Register through the Passport Seva Online Portal. (Click on "Register Now" link on the Home Page).
Step 2: Login to the Passport Seva Online Portal with the registered Login Id.
Step 3: Click "Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport" link. Click on Fresh passport Issuance category only if you never held a passport of the same category(i.e. Ordinary Passport, Diplomatic Passport or Official Passport) in the past.

For Example, if you ever held an Ordinary passport (Deep Blue colour) in the past but never held any Diplomatic (maroon colour) or Official (white colour) passport then you shall apply under Reissue category if applying for an Ordinary Passport but choose the Fresh category if applying for a Diplomatic/ Official passport. Similarly, if you have/held a Diplomatic (or Official) Passport but do not have/held an Ordinary Passport then you are required to apply for an Ordinary Passport under Fresh category while choose the Reissue category if applying for Diplomatic (or Official) passport.
Step 4: Fill the prescribed passport application form online and submit.
Step 5: Click the "Pay and Schedule Appointment" link on the "View Saved/Submitted Applications" screen to schedule an appointment. It is mandatory to make an Online Payment for scheduling an appointments at all Passport Seva Kendras/Passport Offices.

You can make online Payment for your passport application while using Credit/Debit Cards , Internet banking or SBI Bank Challan.

Important Note: Only emergency/medical cases and pre-approved categories may visit Passport Seva Kendra without appointment. Service will be provided at the discretion of Passport Seva Kendra in-charge/Passport Officer.
Step 6: Click the "Print Application Receipt" link to print the application receipt containing Application Reference Number (ARN)/Appointment Number.

Note: It is not mandatory to Carry application printout. Your SMS with your passport application appointment details is also accepted as proof of appointment at Passport Office.
Step 7: Visit your local Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) Or Regional Passport Office (RPO) where you have scheduled the along with required documents in Original.

Important Note: In case of Tatkal passport you will be required to pay Tatkal Charges in cash at the passport office.
3. Process (e-form Submission)
Step 1: Download the e-passport application Form through the "Download e-Form<"
Step 2: Fill the passport e-Form and click the Validate and Save the same. This will generate an XML file, which will be required to upload in your log-in.
Step 3: Register through the Passport Seva Online Portal. (Click on "Register Now")
Step 4: Login to the Passport Seva Online Portal with your registered Login Id.
Step 5: Upload the XML file in your Log-in. Don't upload the PDF passport form at this stage because only XML file is accepted by the system.
Step 6: Click the "Pay and Schedule Appointment" link on the "View Saved/Submitted Applications" screen to schedule an appointment.

It is mandatory to make an Online Payment for scheduling an appointments at all Passport Seva Kendras/Passport Offices.
